Apple’s long-awaited entry into the foldable phone market appears to be inching closer to reality, with new leaks revealing exciting details about the design, display, and durability of the so-called “iPhone Fold.” If current speculation proves true, Apple may launch its first foldable phone in late 2026 or early 2027, and it’s shaping up to be a premium, high-tech hybrid of the iPhone and iPad.

A Familiar Display in a New Form

One of the standouts features of the iPhone Fold will be its internal 7.8-inch display, paired with an external 5.5-inch cover screen. Unlike many foldables that use a squarish aspect ratio, Apple is reportedly opting for a 4:3 aspect ratio on the internal screen—matching the format of the iPad.

This design choice offers several advantages: better app compatibility, a more immersive viewing experience, and smoother integration of iPadOS-style apps. According to leaker Digital Chat Station, Apple wants to ensure that “the software ecology is in line with the iPad,” allowing for a seamless experience across devices.

A Book-Like Foldable—Not a Flip

While Apple reportedly explored several folding designs, the company is believed to have settled on a book-style fold, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. When closed, users interact with a compact 5.5-inch display; when opened, they enjoy a near-tablet experience on the internal screen.

This approach demands major iOS software adaptations. Reports suggest that Apple is redesigning iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16 to offer cross-platform consistency, allowing apps to fluidly adapt to both vertical and horizontal orientations.

Durability at the Core

Apple’s hesitation to enter the foldable race has centered around one major issue: durability. Most current foldables suffer from a visible crease down the center of the internal display—a flaw Apple has been determined to solve.

Enter the metallic glass hinge. Also known as liquid metal, this high-tech material has a random atomic structure that allows it to better resist pressure, bending, and corrosion. Not only does this improve the mechanical reliability of the hinge, but it also minimizes the screen crease, creating a flatter, more refined appearance when the device is open.

Manufactured using rapid cooling methods, metallic glass is reportedly 2.5 times stronger than titanium. In addition to function, the hinge offers a glossy, stainless steel-like finish, adding a luxurious touch to the device’s design.

Thinner Than Ever—And Still Chunky

In terms of thickness, the iPhone Fold is expected to use ultra-thin components based on tech from the upcoming iPhone 17 Air. It could measure just 4.8mm when opened—thinner than Apple’s current thinnest device, the iPad Pro. When closed, it may be between 9mm and 9.5mm, making it noticeably bulkier than a typical iPhone, but competitive with other foldables.

Touch ID Makes a Comeback?

Face ID may not make the cut in this foldable form factor. To keep the device slim and reduce the notch size, Touch ID embedded in the power button is reportedly being considered. This would be a practical move, especially if integrating the full Face ID module compromises the display or thickness.

The Premium Price Tag

With advanced materials, cutting-edge engineering, and a dual-screen setup, the iPhone Fold won’t come cheap. Reports suggest the price could fall between $2,000 and $2,500, potentially making it the most expensive iPhone ever released. Given Apple’s premium brand positioning, this pricing isn’t surprising, especially for a device that aims to replace both a phone and a tablet.

Is It Coming in 2026?
