Matthieu Blazy Takes the Helm at Chanel, Ushering in a New Era

After a six-month global search, Chanel has appointed Matthieu Blazy as its new creative director. The 40-year-old French Belgian designer, known for his innovative craftsmanship at Bottega Veneta, will succeed Virginie Viard, marking a significant shift in the direction of the world’s second-largest luxury fashion house.

A Strategic Appointment Focused on Craft

Blazy’s appointment signals Chanel’s prioritization of craft and design over celebrity status. Unlike his predecessor Karl Lagerfeld, known for his larger-than-life persona, or contemporary designers with pop-culture appeal, Blazy is celebrated within the industry for his meticulous attention to detail. During his three-year tenure at Bottega Veneta, he revitalized the brand with techniques like trompe l’oeil leather that mimics denim and flannel, showcasing his dedication to artistry.

Chanel’s president of fashion, Bruno Pavlovsky, highlighted Blazy’s ability to respect the house’s storied heritage while infusing it with modernity. “Matthieu has the vision and talent to continue Chanel’s leadership in luxury. His approach to ready-to-wear, silhouettes, and accessories aligns with our ambition to push boundaries and maintain relevance,” Pavlovsky said in a statement.

A New Direction for Chanel

Under Blazy, Chanel aims to strike a balance between innovation and tradition. The house has effectively trodden water since Lagerfeld’s passing in 2019, with Viard maintaining the brand’s core identity but failing to resonate with younger audiences. Blazy’s track record suggests a shift toward bolder, more experimental collections. His ability to craft narratives through fashion, evident in Bottega Veneta’s playful shows featuring leather beanbags and knitted bouquets, hints at a fresh creative vision for Chanel.

Blazy’s experience across luxury houses, including Calvin Klein, Maison Margiela, and Celine, positions him to navigate Chanel’s expansive operations. Beyond designing 10 collections annually, he will oversee a couture studio and specialist ateliers such as Lesage and Goossens, which are integral to Chanel’s identity.

Craft Over Celebrity

In choosing Blazy, Chanel has eschewed the industry trend of appointing celebrity designers. Rivals like Louis Vuitton, with Pharrell Williams as menswear designer, have leaned into star power to capture public attention. Chanel’s decision reflects a calculated move to keep the spotlight on its products rather than its creative director.

This strategy mirrors Hermès, another privately owned luxury powerhouse that maintains a low-profile design ethos, ensuring its products, like the iconic Birkin bag, remain the stars. By betting on Blazy, Chanel is doubling down on craftsmanship as the cornerstone of its luxury appeal.

A Long-Term Vision

Pavlovsky emphasized that Blazy’s appointment represents a long-term commitment. “This is not about immediate change. We want Matthieu to have the time to shape Chanel’s future,” he said. This approach allows Blazy to build upon the maison’s legacy thoughtfully, ensuring continuity while steering it into the next decade.

Blazy officially joins Chanel in April 2025, with his debut collection slated for October’s Paris Fashion Week. In the interim, Chanel’s studio team will oversee the upcoming couture and ready-to-wear collections.

The Weight of Expectations

As Blazy steps into one of the most coveted roles in fashion, the pressure to succeed is immense. Chanel is more than a fashion house; it is a cultural icon with a legacy dating back to Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel. The brand’s global revenue reached nearly $20 billion in 2023, a testament to its enduring appeal across clothing, accessories, and beauty products.

For Blazy, the challenge lies in navigating this legacy while appealing to new generations. His knack for creating “wearable dreams,” as described by industry insiders, aligns with the maison’s ethos of timeless elegance. His appointment has already generated excitement within the fashion community, with many viewing him as a designer who can reconcile artistry with commercial success.

A New Chapter Begins

Blazy’s arrival marks the beginning of a new chapter for Chanel. With his emphasis on craft and innovation, the maison is poised to maintain its leadership in luxury while exploring uncharted creative territories. As the fashion world awaits his first collection, all eyes are on how Matthieu Blazy will redefine Chanel for the modern era.
