Miraculous Rescue at Sea: How an Apple Watch Saved a Life

Byron Bay resident Rick Shearman, a seasoned swimmer and surfer, faced an unexpected ordeal that tested his survival skills and highlighted the life-saving potential of modern technology. While enjoying a morning body surfing session at Tallow Beach, Shearman found himself battling rough seas a kilometer offshore. The 49-year-old was soon caught in the impact zone, where waves relentlessly crashed around him.

“I copped a couple of big ones on the head and was held under for a while,” Shearman recounted. “I started to panic a bit and cramp up underwater there.” Despite his extensive experience, the intensity of the situation began to overwhelm him.

Understanding the futility of fighting the ocean, Shearman let the current carry him beyond the breakers in search of a channel to swim back to shore. However, he quickly realized that the entire stretch of beach, from Broken Head to Suffolk Park, was breaking heavily. “It became clear after about 20 minutes that I wasn’t going to make it back in and I needed some assistance,” he said.

With his partner assumed to be away shopping, Shearman knew he couldn’t rely on her to raise the alarm. That’s when he remembered the emergency function on his Apple Watch. Strapped to his arm, the device became his lifeline. While treading water, he managed to activate the emergency call feature and contacted triple-0.

Despite being an experienced swimmer, Rick Shearman was overwhelmed by the power of the ocean.

Calm under pressure, Shearman faced the perplexing question of whether he needed police, fire, or ambulance assistance. “I really didn’t know how to respond,” he admitted. Battling wind and big swells, he found it challenging to use the watch effectively. “I had to hold it up to my ear to hear what was going on and speak to the respondent,” he explained.

Shearman stayed on the line for an hour, providing his location to emergency services. His calm demeanor and clear communication were crucial in coordinating the rescue. Eventually, a helicopter arrived, and he was winched to safety. Reflecting on the experience, Shearman credited his survival to the technology on his wrist. “If it wasn’t for being able to access that service in my watch, I’d probably be bobbing out somewhere in international waters by now,” he said.

Jimmy Keogh from Surf Life Saving Far North Coast emphasized the significance of Shearman’s quick thinking and the role of the Apple Watch in the rescue. “The search area for the person in the water, with the conditions we had, would have been pretty substantial,” Keogh noted. “It could have involved multiple agencies and gone on for days. It’s definitely saved his life.”

Shearman’s ordeal underscored the unpredictable nature of the ocean and the importance of respecting its power. He admitted to underestimating the conditions that day and vowed to be more cautious in the future. “I underestimated it,” he confessed. “It’s amazing that I was able to use that technology to save my life.”

Grateful for the support of his family and friends, Shearman thanked them for their role in coordinating the search. He also expressed his appreciation for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, Surf Life Saving, police, ambulance crew, and staff at Byron Bay Hospital. “No doubt I caused a lot of people on the beach distress, which I am apologetic for,” he said.

Shearman’s story is a testament to the life-saving potential of modern technology and the importance of staying calm in a crisis. His experience serves as a reminder to all swimmers and surfers of the unpredictable and often dangerous nature of the sea, and the value of having reliable safety measures in place.
